Emergency Dentistry

We know dental emergencies can be painful and stressful, so our team is here to provide prompt care when you need it most. Call Hitchin Dental Practice immediately if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Take pain relief such as paracetamol or ibuprofen (following the instructions on the packet).

  • Use temporary dental filling material from a pharmacy or sugar-free chewing gum to cover the cavity.

  • If the crown is still intact, you can use an over-the-counter dental cement or
sugar-free gum to stick it in place, but please don’t use superglue.

  • Keep all pieces and protect the exposed tooth as you would with a lost filling.

  • Keep any fragments, rinse with warm water, apply a cold compress to reduce swelling, and use gauze for bleeding.

  • The sooner you contact us, the better the chance we have of saving the tooth, so please call us immediately.

Handle the tooth carefully by the crown (the part that’s usually visible in your mouth) and gently rinse it with water. Avoid scrubbing or removing any attached tissue fragments. If possible, try to place the tooth back into its socket, ensuring it’s facing the right way. If that’s not feasible, keep the tooth in milk (best choice), your own saliva or water with a pinch of salt .

  • Rinse with warm, salty water and apply a cold compress for swelling. If accompanied by severe pain, swelling, and flu-like symptoms, please visit your most local A&E department.

  • This is not normally considered an emergency unless the gum is damaged or parts of the tooth are still embedded. Child-friendly painkillers can be given and while ice lollies may help relieve pain and swelling.

Never try to re-implant a baby tooth as it could damage the new adult tooth in the gum.

  • We can assess and repair damage or provide urgent adjustments.
